HOTSPOT :: Dajti Enterprise Site - Tirana
Contamination Category: Land contamination
City: Tirana
Address: Tirana at the Sh. A. Dajti, former metallic enterprise beyond the Great Market at the Medrese.
Risk Level: Very High
Population at Risk: 1500
Hazard:

Site Location: Tirana at the Sh. A. Dajti, former metallic enterprise beyond the Great Market at the Medrese.

Total site area: less than 10m2

Problems identified at the site: At the back of a shop in the area, there is a locked room which contains 750kg of mixed cyanides from the previous use of the site as a metallurgical enterprise. This locked area (approximately 10m2) has been the storage place of the mentioned substances for years. Chemicals, stored in metal containers, are not mobile since they are in solid form as chemical cyanide salts.

Rehabilitation measures proposed: Short‐term risk reduction measures consist of sealing the storage room and signposting access forbidden. Long‐term remedial actions consist of removing and disposing of the stored chemicals and removal of floor and wall plaster from inside the storage room to reduce risk of exposure to any potential contamination residual. A set of recommendations for the implementation of these actions is included in the Tender Dossier and Remediation Action Plan (RAP) reports.

Environmental and Social Impact Assessment: Impacts from the short‐term and long‐term action are mainly expected to be positive, given that this is a remediation project. Only some minor temporary adverse impacts, related to the production of dust, noise or disruption of business for a small period of time, for a limited number of people, during the remediation works would be expected, which however, could be minimised by the appropriate measures to be taken.

Estimated costs for rehabilitation: 52,000 Euros.

Estimated duration of the rehabilitation: approximately six months from start of operations (Assumptions and limitations details related to the duration estimate are included in the RAP report).
